Aircraft gearboxes reduce the rotational speed of the engine's main shaft from up to 26,000 rpm to 3,400 rpm, so the shaft can drive system components such as hydraulic pumps, generators, and air-conditioning compressors. Seal the oil in the gearbox to prevent it from leaking from the shaft into and out of the gearbox. Most aircraft gearboxes use end face seals. Face seals typically contain a carbon-graphite seal retaining ring and a silicon carbide or tungsten carbide rotating ring. The dynamic end-faced rings are flattened and fastened together by springs or magnets, so even in the case of high-speed lower rings being turned away from each other, liquid cannot flow between the ring surfaces.
